Gen. Nicholas Alexander (Terry O'Quinn, 7 episodes, 2003-2004) - Alexander had some big shoes to fill after Fitzwallace retired and he became the new Chairman of the Join Chiefs. Elizabeth Bartlet Westin (Annabeth Gish, 6 episodes, 2003-2006) - Horrible taste in men aside, she was a forceful figure who was probably the most Abbey-like of the Bartlet daughters. She’s part of Leo’s family – perhaps not quite a daughter, but at the very least a favorite niece. What about her immediate acceptance that she and the kids will have to move into the White House in January, despite a prior agreement with Matt to the contrary? I confess I get a little creeped out at how excited Carol is about CJ’s old beau Ben, but then Margaret is occasionally like that about CJ’s love life too. I don’t know where she was during the international crises in Season 1, but she was a great addition to the show in the next season. She was a fully realized Republican with a sense of duty. Noteworthy Episode: “The Last Hurrah,” which is the only episode she’s in where she spends the entire time doing her job and not once referencing her relationship with Josh (note that he has to be completely absent from the episode for this to happen). 26. 5. So we were appalled last week when The Wire gave their terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad “Definitive Ranking of Every Character on ‘The West Wing’”. She was Bartlet’s father’s secretary, while Jed was at prep school, and she was Jed’s unofficial big sister for most of his life and political career. Their behavior is actually fairly similar, but where Abbey gets to be “fiery” and have “knock-down drag-out fights” with Jed and be ranked #6, Helen is a “pill” who “only exist[s] to fret and nag” and gets ranked #82. His entitlement, considering that he was never elected VP, is off-putting, to say nothing of how scary it is to hear Will talking about how he and Josh can basically set up a puppet government once he’s elected. Nancy (Renée Estevez, 43 episodes, 1999-2006) - She was sort of a Deputy Mrs. Landingham, and most of her lines consisted of “They’re ready, Mr. President” and “Right this way.” I did love the meta of Bartlet telling her at one point in Season 7 (“Here Today”) that he looked forward to seeing her mother again soon (because Renée Estevez is Martin Sheen’s daughter). Ritchie and Donna are both incredibly memorable characters who suffer more for how they function within the story than who their characters are. Jed Bartlet (Martin Sheen), The West Wing. We’re huge fans of The West Wing, we’ve seen every episode at least twice, and quotes from the show often work their way into our everyday conversations. She puts CJ through the paces on her first day, and when Leo doesn’t magically wake up to give advice, CJ’s real savior becomes Margaret, who has picked up a great deal in the time she spent working for (and with) Leo. Speaker of the House Jeff Haffley (Steven Culp, 9 episodes, 2003-2005) - He could have been a stand-in for New Gingrich, and he certainly raises the profile of Congress in the wake of Bartlet temporarily turning over power. FBI Special Agent Michael Casper (Clark Gregg, 8 episodes, 2001-2004) - Like with Ron Butterfield, whenever Mike Casper is on screen I feel like everything’s going to be okay. I don’t know if it’s true, but it does seem like Babish’s first scene on the show (with the gavel and the recorder) was originally written for Tribbey, but Babish quickly becomes a commanding and memorable character in his own right, and he’s hugely important to the MS arc in particular. Noteworthy Episode: This is a tough choice for Bruno, because every episode he’s in has a striking moment for him. Cregg, Sam Seaborn, Donna Moss, Charlie Young, and Toby Ziegler, all idealistic heroes from the mind of Aaron Sorkin, became passe, practically extinct, and nowhere to be found in Hollywood. She also has perhaps my favorite moment in the series finale, when she gives Ronna a little parting advice (“Your most frequent answer to any question will be no. Mike Chysler (Glenn Morshower, 9 episodes, 2001-2002) - Most prominent in the Colombia, Haiti, and Shareef storylines (not the Shareef assassination but the chain of evidence against him). Vice President “Bingo Bob” Russell (Gary Cole, 22 episodes, 2003-2006) - He has likable moments, and he’s fairly sympathetic in the beginning, but once it becomes clear that he’s set his sights on the presidency all I can see is his opportunism. The West Wing: Every Main Character, Ranked By Likability. Probably her best appearance is in “Pilot,” where she helps Sam navigate his pager swapping and his horrible tour guide duties. Noteworthy Episode: “Separation of Powers,” where she brings Donna into the budget meeting and asks for her input. Sam Seaborn. He has a fairly good (though not great) idea for the chicken ad to air in New Hampshire. Noteworthy Episode: “The Drop-In,” where he’s named the new British Ambassador and argues with Leo about the missile shield. She comes straight to the office after seeing the news about Rosslyn on TV because she’s worried about her boss (“In the Shadow of Two Gunmen”). Also, her name rhymes with Donna and that’s confusing for a minute. I’m an admiral in the U.S. Navy and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff… Beat that with a stick.”, Best Quote: “I’m the only woman on a conference call. I kind of loved how they dealt with NiCole Robinson’s pregnancy by not even addressing it, except in one episode where Josh notices and CJ and Leo confirm that she’s pregnant. 10. Louise Thornton (Janeane Garofalo, 15 episodes, 2005-2006) - Lou was the best addition to the show’s final season and brought something the Santos campaign desperately needed – someone who understood communications and message politics. 5. Noteworthy Episode: “Slow News Day,” where she helps Toby with his Social Security project and doesn’t fall for Donna’s quarter-hearted (at most) attempt to spy. Having said that, he’s fairly politically savvy, which occasionally redeems him. Cathy (Suzy Nakamura, 9 episodes, 1999-2000) - She was only in the first season, but she made an impression and seemed to have a nice relationship with Sam. 31.
