Gen. Nicholas Alexander (Terry O'Quinn, 7 episodes, 2003-2004) - Alexander had some big shoes to fill after Fitzwallace retired and he became the new Chairman of the Join Chiefs. I don’t know the words to my national anthem. Elizabeth Bartlet Westin (Annabeth Gish, 6 episodes, 2003-2006) - Horrible taste in men aside, she was a forceful figure who was probably the most Abbey-like of the Bartlet daughters. She’s part of Leo’s family – perhaps not quite a daughter, but at the very least a favorite niece. What about her immediate acceptance that she and the kids will have to move into the White House in January, despite a prior agreement with Matt to the contrary? I confess I get a little creeped out at how excited Carol is about CJ’s old beau Ben, but then Margaret is occasionally like that about CJ’s love life too. I don’t know where she was during the international crises in Season 1, but she was a great addition to the show in the next season. She was a fully realized Republican with a sense of duty. Noteworthy Episode: “The Last Hurrah,” which is the only episode she’s in where she spends the entire time doing her job and not once referencing her relationship with Josh (note that he has to be completely absent from the episode for this to happen). 26. 5. His explanation of his opinion on gays serving in the military is a thing of beauty and a joy forever. That, and he’s pretty condescending to Nancy McNally in “The Warfare of Genghis Khan.” Every time we see him he’s just screwed up, it seems, notably in “Lord John Marbury” when the CIA somehow missed India moving 300,000 troops into Kashmir. His scene in the car with the President is great, but even better is the scene where he puts Toby at ease about the lack of tent cover. 3. 13. Noteworthy Episode: “Running Mates” is an episode a lot of people point to when looking for reasons not to like her, but this is an important episode for her. Noteworthy Episode: “Liftoff,” which is the first real chance we get to see how vital she is to the Chief of Staff’s office. ”, Best Quote: “This is Ms. Cregg. 28. 23. An instrument of good. Best Quote: Sam: You’re asking me out on a date. I love the hard-hitting reporter aspect of Danny’s character. Schools should be palaces. They are in the first *and* the final episode, and they are a constant presence throughout the series (though less so in the last two, since they were traditionally more associated with Josh and he’s elsewhere). They should be making six-figure salaries. I mind you doing it out loud. He’s more than a match for Josh’s cocky defensiveness and shows a tremendous amount of empathy without crossing over into touchy-feeliness. Noteworthy Episode: “Shutdown," in which he calls the President’s bluff and loses. For anyone who is interested my top 5 is as follows: CJ, … If we’re gonna walk into walls, I want us running into ‘em full speed.”, “All right! This sounds like an amazing way to spend eternity. It did disrupt the unit. Annabeth Schott (Kristin Chenoweth, 23 episodes, 2004-2006) - Once CJ is promoted and the dynamics among the senior staff are shaken up, Annabeth was an interesting ingredient to add to the mix. Except, 20 years later, it has become “cool” again to care openly and passionately about such things. fbi agent mike casper (definitely not phil coulson). 27. Then they brought the boyfriends out, and they all fought, right there on television. There’s no point in trying.”, Best Quote: (TIE) “Listen up — our ground game isn’t working. A friend of my dad’s was at one of the camps. Debbie and CJ were both afraid to say no to her, and if she had wanted to, she could have been a formidable candidate for office herself. I do like to imagine, though, that she might be his unnamed fiancee when he returns to Washington (they’d be the Carville and Matalin of the show’s universe), because they had such a cool dynamic. Rina (Melissa Marsala, 6 episodes, 2003-2004) - Toby’s assistant, and a more successful attempt to bring fresh blood into the staff than Ryan, in my opinion, but she was a strange addition. She has a sense of humor about her job, but she still takes it very seriously. Probably her biggest appearance is when she’s giving a White House tour in “The Lame Duck Congress” and Toby interrupts her to tell everyone they’re going to die. 04 November 2020. His most significant and biggest appearance is in the series finale when he talks to CJ after her nostalgia trip to the press room on her way out of the White House. The fictional country of Qumar is a long-time ally of … Plus, she could argue with Josh without it being a flirting exercise. Noteworthy Episode: “Here Today,” where he deals with Toby’s confession to the leak. Doug Westin (Steven Eckholdt, 5 episodes, 2003-2006) - One wonders why Liz Bartlet fell for this guy in the first place. When you think of the Taliban, think of the Nazis. 38. 34. I love that she had no ambition to be the Press Secretary (despite many fans wishing she would be); she was fine and perfectly at home at the informal gaggle and reading off itineraries, but I can’t imagine what she would have done if she’d had to brief the press, say, during the leak scandal and field all those questions. 39. Noteworthy Episode: “King Corn,” I guess, more for the fact that he’s least icky here. We got Zoey in the car, and at 150 yards and five stories up, the shooters were down in 9.2 seconds after the first shot was fired. She didn’t like the limelight, but she ultimately accepted that it was sometimes useful (such as when she made a statement about the importance of keeping politics out of scientific research). Percy Fitzwallace (John Amos, 21 episodes, 1999-2004) - As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Admiral Fitzwallace was one of the President’s (and Leo’s, for that matter) best and most trusted advisers on military matters. Reporter Steve (Charles Noland, 43 episodes, 1999-2006) - My favorite reporter character other than Danny and Greg. Best Quote: “I heard once – I don’t know if this is true – I heard once that you convinced the President to let you rewrite a section of the State of the Union with less than twenty-four hours to go. He used to come over to the house, and he and my dad used to shoot some pinochle. I especially love how determined he is not to take credit for success because that is just Not Done. Mallory: No, I’m asking you to accompany me to see an internationally renowned opera company perform a work indigenous to its culture. 24. She lost both of her sons in Vietnam, but she was a mother figure for the entire staff, particularly the other assistants. It’s a line you know. 1789, amended in 1815. He also doesn’t seem to care for Hutchinson, which pleases me. Ed [Magbojos] & Larry [last name unknown] (Peter James Smith (46 episodes) and William Duffy (47 episodes), 1999-2006) - The Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of The West Wing. His most singular appearance is in “Inauguration, Part 1,” where he suggests that the President get Jack Reese to write a force depletion report in order to go around Hutchinson and avoid a leak. 44. Noteworthy Episode: “Red Haven’s on Fire,” where she calls Will out for being horrible to the interns. Hurray for a woman of color who wasn’t a size nothing being in a key campaign position! Our Definitive Ranking of The West Wing Characters. Bring me the finest muffins and bagels in all the land.”, Best Quote: “When you think of Afghanistan, think of Poland. Where is the praise for Helen standing up for the right decision on the ethanol pledge? When you think of the citizens of Afghanistan, think of the Jews in concentration camps. Also, he’s Canadian and CJ could never seem to remember that. He had respect for the President and Leo, though he frequently butted heads with both of them, and I sympathized with his anger at finding out about Bartlet’s M.S. So here it is. Noteworthy Episode: She makes an impressive appearance in “The Mommy Problem,” which is when we first meet her, but the quintessential Lou episode for me is “The Al Smith Dinner,” where we really get to see how she operates. Bless him for being sorry that Toby has to go through this unpleasantness doing his job. And my dad’s friend said, ‘What could you possibly be thanking God for?’ He said, ‘I’m thanking God for not making me like them.’ Bad people can’t be recognized on sight. Characters like Jed Bartlet, Josh Lyman, C.J. We don’t need little changes, we need gigantic, monumental changes. Steve Ryan is great, but I roll my eyes every time his character is on screen. 16. Greg Brock (Sam Robards, 8 episodes, 2004-2005) - In many ways, he was a new version of Danny. It’s a … She knew how to sell him on a tough decision and she knew when there was no point in arguing with him. Cregg played by the untouchable Allison Janney. Carol Fitzpatrick (Melissa Fitzgerald, 101 episodes, 1999-2006) - Carol’s a tricky one, because she’s borderline “consistent background.” She does have a great relationship with CJ, though, and like Josh and Donna (in their non-romantic moments, that is) they’re just as much close friends as they are boss and assistant. So we were appalled last week when The Wire gave their terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad “Definitive Ranking of Every Character on ‘The West Wing’”. She was Bartlet’s father’s secretary, while Jed was at prep school, and she was Jed’s unofficial big sister for most of his life and political career. Edie Ortega (Diana Maria Riva, 8 episodes, 2005-2006) - As Deputy Campaign Manager for Strategic Planning for the Santos-McGarry campaign, most of her presence in the show consisted of scheduling issues, but she was the first signal in Season 7 that the Santos campaign would be a refreshing sea of diverse faces. The calligraphy is beautiful. Which "West Wing" Character Are You? Ned Carlson (Evan Arnold, 10 episodes, 2004-2005) - Ned was pretty cool in Season 6, when he and Ronna were pretty much the whole Santos campaign staff (apart from Josh). Noteworthy Episode: Everyone loves her job interview(s), but my pick is “Election Night,” which is her first official day on the job. Their behavior is actually fairly similar, but where Abbey gets to be “fiery” and have “knock-down drag-out fights” with Jed and be ranked #6, Helen is a “pill” who “only exist[s] to fret and nag” and gets ranked #82. His entitlement, considering that he was never elected VP, is off-putting, to say nothing of how scary it is to hear Will talking about how he and Josh can basically set up a puppet government once he’s elected. He said, ‘What are you doing?’ The guy said he was thanking God. 1. ENTERTAINMENT 2.0K PLAYS By: Khadija Leon. It’s entirely up to you.”, Best Quote: “I was watching a television program before, with a sort of a roving moderator who spoke to a seated panel of young women who were having some sort of problem with their boyfriends – apparently, because the boyfriends had all slept with the girlfriends’ mothers. Nancy (Renée Estevez, 43 episodes, 1999-2006) - She was sort of a Deputy Mrs. Landingham, and most of her lines consisted of “They’re ready, Mr. President” and “Right this way.” I did love the meta of Bartlet telling her at one point in Season 7 (“Here Today”) that he looked forward to seeing her mother again soon (because Renée Estevez is Martin Sheen’s daughter). Ritchie and Donna are both incredibly memorable characters who suffer more for how they function within the story than who their characters are. Jed Bartlet (Martin Sheen), The West Wing. We’re huge fans of The West Wing, we’ve seen every episode at least twice, and quotes from the show often work their way into our everyday conversations. She puts CJ through the paces on her first day, and when Leo doesn’t magically wake up to give advice, CJ’s real savior becomes Margaret, who has picked up a great deal in the time she spent working for (and with) Leo. Speaker of the House Jeff Haffley (Steven Culp, 9 episodes, 2003-2005) - He could have been a stand-in for New Gingrich, and he certainly raises the profile of Congress in the wake of Bartlet temporarily turning over power. FBI Special Agent Michael Casper (Clark Gregg, 8 episodes, 2001-2004) - Like with Ron Butterfield, whenever Mike Casper is on screen I feel like everything’s going to be okay. I don’t know if it’s true, but it does seem like Babish’s first scene on the show (with the gavel and the recorder) was originally written for Tribbey, but Babish quickly becomes a commanding and memorable character in his own right, and he’s hugely important to the MS arc in particular. Noteworthy Episode: This is a tough choice for Bruno, because every episode he’s in has a striking moment for him. The people that I have met have been extraordinarily qualified, their intent is good. The unit changed. It was the act of madmen. What about her “we don’t accept” at hearing about Russell’s VP offer? Ryan Pierce (Jesse Bradford, 9 episodes, 2003-2004) - Josh’s intern, who I like in small doses, but we get more than small doses of him in Season 5. Cregg, Sam Seaborn, Donna Moss, Charlie Young, and Toby Ziegler, all idealistic heroes from the mind of Aaron Sorkin, became passe, practically extinct, and nowhere to be found in Hollywood. She also has perhaps my favorite moment in the series finale, when she gives Ronna a little parting advice (“Your most frequent answer to any question will be no. Mike Chysler (Glenn Morshower, 9 episodes, 2001-2002) - Most prominent in the Colombia, Haiti, and Shareef storylines (not the Shareef assassination but the chain of evidence against him). When Aaron Sorkin's political drama The West Wing debuted in 1999, the show's standout character was Press Secretary turned Chief of Staff C.J. I come here for an hour and do office work, and then I go to St. Jude’s for an hour to play basketball. 37. The show slowly weaned us from Mrs. Landingham, and she gets one more mention in this episode, but after this one we don’t hear about her again, because now we know the President is in good hands. But he wasn’t evil and he wasn’t a moron. Otherwise, comment on it or don’t comment on it, but it’s the lead in tomorrow’s paper. (If only.). 43. Vice President “Bingo Bob” Russell (Gary Cole, 22 episodes, 2003-2006) - He has likable moments, and he’s fairly sympathetic in the beginning, but once it becomes clear that he’s set his sights on the presidency all I can see is his opportunism. The West Wing: Every Main Character, Ranked By Likability. Probably her best appearance is in “Pilot,” where she helps Sam navigate his pager swapping and his horrible tour guide duties. Noteworthy Episode: “Separation of Powers,” where she brings Donna into the budget meeting and asks for her input. Sam Seaborn. He has a fairly good (though not great) idea for the chicken ad to air in New Hampshire. Noteworthy Episode: “The Drop-In,” where he’s named the new British Ambassador and argues with Leo about the missile shield. She comes straight to the office after seeing the news about Rosslyn on TV because she’s worried about her boss (“In the Shadow of Two Gunmen”). Also, her name rhymes with Donna and that’s confusing for a minute. I’m an admiral in the U.S. Navy and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff… Beat that with a stick.”, Best Quote: “I’m the only woman on a conference call. I kind of loved how they dealt with NiCole Robinson’s pregnancy by not even addressing it, except in one episode where Josh notices and CJ and Leo confirm that she’s pregnant. 10. Louise Thornton (Janeane Garofalo, 15 episodes, 2005-2006) - Lou was the best addition to the show’s final season and brought something the Santos campaign desperately needed – someone who understood communications and message politics. 5. Mallory: There will be, under no circumstances, sex for you at the end of the evening. Noteworthy Episode: “Slow News Day,” where she helps Toby with his Social Security project and doesn’t fall for Donna’s quarter-hearted (at most) attempt to spy. While all the other reporters were buzzing around the kidnapping story, Danny was still working on his story about the Shareef assassination. Having said that, he’s fairly politically savvy, which occasionally redeems him. Cathy (Suzy Nakamura, 9 episodes, 1999-2000) - She was only in the first season, but she made an impression and seemed to have a nice relationship with Sam. 31. His entrance – near the end of the show after a tremendous build up – is one of the all-time greatest introductions of a character. I bet they give her something cool and funny and totally pertinent to the contemporary storyline to do!” 66. She has some new rules, which the staff bristles at, but they all have a reason and it’s kind of awesome how much thought and research she’s put into things like how the President’s schedule gets behind every day. Ordering An Assassination In A Foreign Country. I don’t like the origin story of how she was written into the show, I don’t like her “fortune cookie” feminism, I don’t like how she’s not like other feminists (*sexy wink*), I don’t like how everything she does on the show is framed by her relationship with Josh, I don’t like how she makes asinine judgments about a cocktail waitress for bringing an extra olive to a guy she’s not even dating, and I don’t like how she’s just generally kind of an asshole. Say they like high taxes and spending your money. Noteworthy Episode: He may ultimately spend more time with the President, but there’s no question that “Noel” is his finest appearance on the show. Like Mrs. Landingham, she’s a formidable but caring figure for the senior staff (is there anything better than her spraying Josh in the face like he’s a misbehaving cat? September 16, 2014. 2. Schools should be incredibly expensive for government and absolutely free of charge to its citizens, just like national defense. She ended up as his Executive Secretary (one of the most moving scenes in the series finale was Debbie’s advice to her) and - surprise! I am new here, but a long time WW fan. Secretary of Defense, Miles Hutchinson (Steve Ryan, 16 episodes, 2003-2006) - Hutchinson is the Actual Worst. Nancy McNally (Anna Deavere Smith, 20 episodes, 2000-2006) - Like Fitz, she is one of the White House’s most trusted voices in the Situation Room. If it weren’t for his libido and his occasional arrogance, he wouldn’t have been a bad President (though perhaps an uninspiring one). She’s not trying to stop her husband from doing anything, but she has valid concerns about what the campaign is doing to their family – concerns which Matt frankly doesn’t acknowledge for most of the episode. 19. Honestly, I did, because I was so afraid my loathing had something to do with shipping and I think a character being in the way of one’s favorite romantic pairing is a shitty reason to dislike a character. Some The West Wing … OR DONNA MOSS AT 39!?). From The West Wing! Noteworthy Episode: “Process Stories,” in which she celebrates her reelection and states in no uncertain terms that if anyone has a problem with her having children out of wedlock they can bring it on. Do I have a bizarrely androgynous voice?”, Best Quote: “Mallory, education is the silver bullet. Noteworthy Episode: “The Hubbert Peak,” which is her first official day at the White House. No one should be treated this way.”, ‘You’re the guy who goes into the 7-11 to get Satan a pack of cigarettes’, ‘streets of heaven are too crowded with angels tonight’. Noteworthy Episode: “Freedonia” is where Ned has his best moment – telling Santos that, in terms of the “Presidential voice,” it’s the President who makes the voice, not the other way around. You can’t handle the truth! Despite his charm and charisma, Sam was written out of the show in the fourth season as a result of disagreements over pay and the diminishing size of his role on the show. 16. 35. We figure it’s pretty ridiculous to do everyone that’s ever had a moment on the screen (how are you going to differentiate between one guest star and another? Her conversation with Donna is great, and I think it’s instrumental to her journey for the rest of the campaign and through the transition. She has a nice, if brief, arc in Season 5, where we see her recovering from her kidnapping ordeal, but like a lot of other supporting players from the early seasons, she drifts off to the wayside as the focus shifts to the 2006 election. Noteworthy Episode: “Full Disclosure,” which is where we first meet him. his role is never really defined). 1. 6. I never could get invested in whatever was going on with her and Sam, but her introduction on the show (and Sam’s subsequent humiliation) was pretty unforgettable. She was a Congresswoman from Maryland (MARYLAND! Ed [Magbojos] & Larry [last name unknown] (Peter James Smith (46 episodes) and William Duffy (47 episodes), 1999-2006) - The Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of The West Wing. “In my entire life, I have never found anything charming.”, Our Definitive Ranking of The West Wing Characters, “Definitive Ranking of Every Character on ‘The West Wing’”, Four Ways the Lannister Twins Can Come to Their Story’s End, If ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Let Us Write the Post-Credits Scenes, All of Our Theories for ‘Avengers: Endgame’, Our Predictions for the Final Season of ‘Game of Thrones’, 100 Things to Think About During Your Second Viewing of ‘Us’.
